Are you a proactive problem solver with excellent communication skills who is ready to take the next step towards technical leadership? If so, we have an exciting opportunity for you as an Assistant Lead Electrical Engineer. 

What you'll do

Working as part of the Electrical Implementation Team (EIT), you will support the Lead Electrical Engineers in delivering electrical engineering solutions for capital schemes across water and wastewater treatment and network sites. 

You will take ownership of defined technical activities and project workstreams, while supporting the Lead Electrical Engineer with governance, technical assurance and stakeholder management activities.

Acting as the bridge between the Electrical Engineer and Lead Electrical Engineer roles, you will provide technical guidance to Electrical Engineers while developing your leadership and project delivery skills.  

Your responsibilities will include: 

  • supporting the Lead Electrical Engineer in the delivery and coordination of electrical design activities for capital projects 
  • leading site surveys and investigations, including electrical condition surveys, harmonic surveys, earthing network surveys and duct network surveys 
  • producing technical reports and recommendations to support project development 
  • coordinating and reviewing electrical design deliverables, including cable schedules, cable route diagrams, power distribution models and technical specifications 
  • providing technical guidance and mentoring to Electrical Engineers, graduates and apprentices 
  • supporting governance activities and undertaking technical reviews to ensure compliance with company standards, WIMES requirements and regulatory obligations 
  • attending and leading technical meetings, design reviews, HAZOP workshops and constructability reviews as required 
  • liaising with project managers, operations teams, contractors, DNOs, suppliers, automation teams and other project stakeholders 
  • acting as the primary electrical engineering contact for assigned project workstreams 
  • supporting construction teams by providing technical advice and resolving electrical engineering issues during project delivery 
  • reviewing documentation produced by Electrical Engineers and providing feedback to ensure quality and consistency 
  • identifying opportunities for cost reduction, standardisation, innovation and energy-efficiency improvements 
  • assisting with the preparation and review of MCC data sheets and equipment specifications 
  • coordinating electrical engineering activities across multiple projects to support programme delivery.

What you'll need

You will be an experienced electrical engineer with strong technical knowledge and the ability to independently lead technical activities while supporting and developing others within the team. 

You will be an effective communicator, capable of building strong relationships with stakeholders and providing clear technical guidance across a range of projects. 

In addition, you will have: 

  • a degree, HNC/HND or equivalent qualification in Electrical Engineering or a related discipline 
  • qualifications appropriate to industrial electrical engineering, including BS7671 Requirements for Electrical Installations (18th Edition) 
  • experience in electrical design, construction or maintenance within an industrial environment 
  • experience producing and reviewing electrical engineering documentation and design deliverables 
  • a strong understanding of low-voltage electrical distribution systems and industrial electrical installations 
  • knowledge of relevant legislation and standards, including CDM Regulations and Health & Safety requirements 
  • strong communication, organisational and stakeholder management skills 
  • the ability to mentor and support the development of junior engineers 
  • strong IT skills and experience working with engineering documentation systems. 

It would also be beneficial if you have:

  • experience within the water and wastewater industry 
  • knowledge of WIMES standards and specifications 
  • understanding of ATEX requirements 
  • experience using AutoCAD and electrical design software 
  • knowledge of power cable calculation software 
  • awareness of BS EN 61439 Low-Voltage Switchgear and Control gear Assemblies 
  • membership of a professional institution such as the IET or progress towards professional registration.
