Mainlaying & Small Schemes department is now looking for a suitably qualified candidate to work as part of a project team to lead the delivery of engineering solutions, for the benefit of Wessex Water, taking responsibility for the technical and administrative aspects of several projects to ensure they are delivered within agreed budgets and timescales.

What you'll do

Provide guidance to other members of the project team and expertise in areas of specialist knowledge and experience.

Your key responsibilities will include:

  • leading small/medium and large-sized projects
  • specifying and managing surveys as necessary, involving third-party contractors as appropriate (e.g. ground and geochemical investigation, topographic surveys, pump tests, condition surveys)
  • requeting E3MP for the technical aspects of a project and addressing environmental actions as specified in E3MP (in conjunction with others)
  • ensuring that environmental actions as specified in E3MP are addressed
  • the structural design of pipelines / concrete structures
  • considering the buildability issues during design
  • creating outline/detail design drawings in CAD
  • managing detail design information (detail drawings and specifications, as well as snagging lists for construction teams, as built drawings / plans)
  • completing design/Construction estimates and assisting the Project Manager with programmes
  • Option development and appraisal, and preparing Options/Outline Stage Proposal Reports
  • submitting HAUC Permits
  • liasing with third parties (regulatory bodies, landowners, statutory consultees, etc.)
  • detailed designing, including preparation of construction drawings
  • designing hazard identification and elimination/reduction
  • liasing with Site Managers on technical issues
  • complying with Construction and Design Management Regulations (CDM)
  • presenting designs to stakeholders with sufficient skill to ensure approval of what may be controversial issues.

What you'll need

  • Proven experience in designing water mains infrastructure.
  • Computer literacy and competency in Wessex Water Systems.
  • An understanding of operational infrastructure.
  • A Higher National Certificate (HNC) in Civil Engineering or equivalent.
  • An awareness of Business / Commercial practices.
  • Good working knowledge of Wessex Water's technical standards, people and systems.
  • Sound communication skills, including report writing.
  • The ability to be effective in planning, organising and delivering the team's outputs to meet key target dates in particular.
  • Good knowledge and understanding of CDM Regulations and the designer's role.
