Are you educated to degree level or above in environmental science, catchment science or a related discipline? If so, we have a great opportunity for you in our Catchment Delivery Team.

The Wessex Water Catchment Delivery Team has worked with farmers and landowners for 15 years to deliver catchment management within the Wessex region and improve water quality. The team has a reputation as one of the best catchment management teams in the industry.

What you'll do

Working with other scientists, technicians and catchment advisors in the development of catchment management schemes, your role will contribute to providing the scientific evidence for the effectiveness of catchment management in improving water quality. This will involve contributing to the development of robust field monitoring programmes.

Day to day, you will:

  • collate, analyse and contribute to the reporting of catchment-derived data to quantify the impact of catchment management within ground and surface drinking water catchments for pesticides and nutrients
  • ensure that data collection and analysis are quality-assured, robust, and presentable to a wide range of both internal and external audiences. There will be plenty of opportunities to get out into the field to collect data.

The team fosters an environment where new ideas and innovation are welcomed and encouraged. You will also be required to keep informed of developments in the wider industry and academic community to incorporate new scientific knowledge, mitigation measures or ways of working into our schemes.

What you'll need

You will have a sound scientific approach and be educated to degree level in environmental science or a related field, or have equivalent practical experience. Knowledge and understanding of diffuse and point source land management pollution, pollutant cycling, water management and/or agriculture will provide candidates with an excellent advantage.

Additional key requirements for the role include:

  • strong demonstrated skills in spatial analysis and remote sensing
  • highly numerate with excellent data analysis and statistical skills
  • demonstrated IT experience of ArcGIS Pro (or other GIS software), RStudio and Microsoft Office
  • good oral and written communication skills, with an ability to contribute to technical reports and communicate technical information to different audiences
  • ability to work independently and within a diverse team of scientists, technicians and catchment advisers
  • motivated and enthusiastic to work on environmental issues
  • full UK driving license.

Additional desirable requirements for the role include:

  • knowledge of environmental legislation, drinking water regulations and issues relating to water abstraction
  • understanding of environmental mitigation measures (e.g. nature-based solutions)
  • experience of fieldwork
  • experience in operating and maintaining scientific equipment
  • ability to swim.
