Principal Compliance Engineer - Machinery, ATEX and DSEAR

If so, we have an exciting opportunity for you as a Principal Compliance Engineer – Machinery Safety, ATEX & DSEAR.

What you'll do

We are looking for a Principal Compliance Engineer to act as our organisation's Technical Authority for DSEAR and ATEX, leading the governance and assurance of hazardous area compliance across Wessex Water.

In this critical safety role, you will ensure that all assets, systems and processes meet regulatory requirements and are designed, operated and maintained in a way that prevents ignition risks and protects our people, assets and environment.

Typical day-to-day activities in this role include working closely with engineering, operational and project teams to ensure that appropriate standards, risk controls and maintenance practices are embedded across the asset base.

Your role will involve:

• acting as the Technical Authority for DSEAR and ATEX across the organisation
• developing and maintaining engineering standards for hazardous area, functional safety and machinery safety
• providing technical assurance for new builds, asset modifications and operational systems
• ensuring the correct selection, installation and maintenance of safety-related devices and  ATEX-rated equipment across its lifecycle
• overseeing DSEAR and Personal Machinery Interaction risk assessments, documentation and inspection regimes (PUWER)
• chairing technical governance forums and driving best practice engineering standards
• developing and implementing competence frameworks for internal teams and contractors
• working closely with contractors and suppliers to ensure technical competence and compliance
• collaborating with Mechanical and Electrical Duty Holders to support safe operation and maintenance.

What you'll need

Ideally, you will come from a process safety, utilities, or industrial engineering background, with significant experience in hazardous area compliance and technical leadership.

You will need to demonstrate:

• strong experience in DSEAR / ATEX compliance or process safety engineering
• proven capability in a senior or principal engineering role
• the ability to provide technical governance and influence across an organisation
• excellent communication skills and the ability to engage stakeholders at all levels
• strong risk management and problem-solving capability
• experience working in safety-critical or regulated environments
• the ability to influence contractors and suppliers to achieve compliance outcomes.

In addition, you will need:

• a relevant engineering degree or equivalent qualification
• professional registration (CEng/IEng) or working towards it (desirable)
• relevant certifications (e.g. CompEx, functional safety, NEBOSH – desirable)
• a proactive, collaborative and solutions-focused approach.
