This is a hands-on, operational role focused on protecting customers, the environment, and the sewerage network. As a Sewerage Operator, you'll work as part of a skilled field team responding to incidents, carrying out planned and reactive works, and ensuring our assets operate safely and effectively.

This role is suited to someone comfortable working in challenging environments, making decisions on site, and engaging directly with customers and contractors.

Pay will increase following the successful completion of probation and role-specific training. The role also offers enhanced earning potential through standby duties, call-outs, and overtime, allowing employees to significantly increase their overall income

What you'll do

You'll be responsible for maintaining and responding to issues across the sewerage network, including:

  • attending reactive incidents such as blockages, flooding, pollution events, and asset failures
  • assessing situations on site and taking appropriate action to minimise environmental and customer impact
  • liaising directly with customers, contractors, and internal teams to resolve issues safely and efficiently
  • operating sewerage equipment, including jetting units and CCTV, to investigate and resolve faults
  • completing accurate site records, incident reports, and feedback to support compliance and future planning
  • carrying out routine maintenance activities alongside emergency and unplanned work
  • taking ownership of health and safety on site, including protecting colleagues, contractors, customers, and the public.

As part of a 24/7 operational service, you'll take part in a standby rota (typically one week in four), covering incidents throughout the year. This role involves working in pressurised environments for up to 45 hours per week.

What you'll need

You'll be practical, safety-focused, and comfortable working in a fast-paced operational environment. You'll also bring:

  • experience using sewer jetting equipment and CCTV systems
  • a QCF in Sewerage Operations or City & Guilds equivalent (or willingness to work towards certification)
  • a strong understanding of health and safety, particularly in confined or high-risk environments
  • confined space and Streetworks certification (desirable, but training can be provided)
  • basic IT skills, including Microsoft Office (full training provided for internal systems)
  • a full UK driving licence (company vehicle provided).

What you'll receive

  • A combined pension contribution of up to 20%.
  • Career progression and professional development opportunities.
  • 25 days' holiday rising to 28 with length of service.
  • The opportunity to sell up to five days of holiday every year.
  • The opportunity to buy up to ten days of holiday each year (subject to conditions).
  • A healthcare package that allows you to claim back healthcare costs.
  • Life assurance of up to eight times your salary.
  • The opportunity to lease a new electric car through salary sacrifice (subject to conditions).
  • Cashback and discounts from more than 3,000 retailers.
  • One paid volunteering day each year.
  • Enhanced family leave and pay arrangements.
  • Access to an interactive health and wellbeing platform.
  • Support from trained mental health first aiders.
  • A £1,000 referral fee if you recommend someone who is successfully recruited by us.
