As a Cyber Security Operations Apprentice, you will help protect the organisation's systems and services across IT, operational technology (OT), and cloud environments. Working as part of a security team, you will learn how to monitor and respond to security issues, support investigations into alerts, and assist with security incidents under the guidance of experienced colleagues. You will use a range of security tools to identify and record potential issues while developing the skills, knowledge, and practical experience needed for a career in cyber security.

What You'll Do

Build Your Security Knowledge

  • Learn about common cybersecurity threats and how organisations identify them.
  • Understand how security teams investigate and assess security events.
  • Gain experience using the security tools used across the business.
  • Develop your skills across IT, operational technology (OT), and cloud systems through training and hands-on experience.

Maintain Awareness of Security Risks

  • Help review information about new cyber threats and security weaknesses.
  • Learn how current threats could affect the organisation.
  • Gain experience using online sources and security tools to support investigations.

Use and Support Security Tools

  • Use security tools under supervision to help monitor and investigate potential issues.
  • Assist team members in reviewing alerts and understanding how security rules work.
  • Keep accurate records of activities and findings.
  • Build hands-on experience with security tools through training and day-to-day tasks.

Represent the Cyber Security Team

  • Help share information between the organisations and security partners.
  • Pass on important information during security incidents and keep records up to date.
  • Support team members when working with IT teams and other parts of the business.
  • Help manage routine security incidents and raise issues to senior team members when needed.
  • Keep clear and accurate records of activities and communications.

Support Planning, Reporting and Compliance

  • Help create clear reports for security incidents and investigations.
  • Share observations from security alerts with senior team members.
  • Support reviews of team processes by providing information and documentation.
  • Assist with compliance activities by gathering evidence when required.
  • Learn about security regulations, standards and best practices.

Follow Secure Standards and Ways of Working

  • Follow agreed processes and instructions when carrying out security tasks.
  • Provide feedback on procedures and recurring security issues.
  • Help update guidance documents and team procedures.
  • Support the implementation of security controls and improvements.
  • Learn about new cyber threats and how they affect the organisation.
  • Help prepare and run phishing awareness exercises and support reporting activities.

Support Security Improvements

  • Help identify, investigate and respond to security issues across the organisation.
  • Highlight recurring security alerts or potential issues to senior team members.
  • Assist with security tasks in cloud services under guidance.
  • Develop knowledge of Windows and Linux systems to support investigations and security activities.

Guide and support cybersecurity across the business. 

  • Work alongside Security Team members to support cybersecurity activities and develop an understanding of IT security topics through supervised practical experience.

What you'll need  

The key areas required are: 

Applicants must meet the eligibility requirements for enrolment / be enrolled on a Level 3 Cyber Security Apprenticeship (or equivalent recognised apprenticeship standard). 

A minimum of GCSE (or equivalent) qualifications in English and Mathematics at Grade 4/C or above is required. 

No prior cybersecurity certifications are required; however, demonstrable interest in information technology, computing, and cybersecurity is desirable. 

As well as:

  • a passion for developing a hands-on technology skill
  • an interest in cyber security and how organisations protect themselves from online threats
  • a basic understanding of what cybersecurity is and good security practices
  • willingness to learn how to use security tools and technologies
  • an interest in investigating and understanding security issues
  • good written communication skills and attention to detail
  • clear verbal communication skills and confidence to ask questions
  • ability to work well with others across different teams
  • an understanding of the importance of passwords, access controls and secure systems
  • an interest in learning how cyber attackers operate and how organisations defend against them
  • basic familiarity with Microsoft Windows, with a willingness to learn about Linux systems
  • enthusiasm for developing technical and problem-solving skills.

Qualifications

On completion of this apprenticeship, you will hold a Level 3 apprenticeship as a Cyber Security Technician.

Total Length of Apprenticeship – 19 months

Training provision 

This apprenticeship is the Level 3 Cyber Security Technician standard. The training element will be provided by Ginger Nut Training and consists of a blend of remote monthly one-to-one sessions and group work including webinars, online courses, videos as well as self-study. You will also complete in-house training and learn on the job from your colleagues. The apprenticeship is typically 19-20 months in duration, which takes into account the final assessment period.
