Are you passionate about using nature to solve environmental challenges? Do you enjoy turning complex data into meaningful insights that drive real-world impact? This is an exciting opportunity to play a central role in monitoring and evaluating constructed wetlands and other nature‑based solutions (NBS) that deliver genuine environmental gains.

We're looking for someone with strong analytical skills, excellent reporting ability and a deep understanding of constructed wetlands to help advance our nature‑based solutions strategy.

What you'll do

We have a 12‑month maternity cover position for an enthusiastic environmental scientist to lead Wessex Water's wetland environmental investigations. You'll be at the heart of our NBS programme, designing in-field monitoring, analysing data and reporting how constructed wetlands improve water quality, biodiversity and amenity. The role can be based in Bath or Wimborne.

A key part of the role is delivering a major WINEP investigation. You will oversee the assessment of 36 NBS sites and produce a regulatory report for April 2027. This will involve:

  • designing ecological and water quality monitoring programmes
  • evaluating wetland performance and Natural Capital benefits
  • providing clear, robust reporting for regulators and stakeholders.

Alongside this, you'll provide monitoring, data analysis and quality assurance services for internal teams, the Environment Agency and other stakeholders to support permitting requirements and agreements.

What you'll need

In this role, you'll bring:

  • experience delivering constructed wetland projects and carrying out design calculations, particularly for nutrient reduction
  • a strong understanding of nutrient pathways from farming and wastewater, and how they impact water quality
  • knowledge of wetland design and construction principles, and how NBS benefit water quality and biodiversity
  • experience designing environmental sampling and analysis programmes
  • familiarity with environmental legislation and water quality monitoring
  • excellent technical report writing
  • strong analytical skills and confidence in interpreting complex datasets
  • proficiency with ArcGIS, MS Office (especially Excel), R and wetland modelling tools
  • ability to work with and influence a wide range of stakeholders, including farmers and landowners
  • confidence in presenting findings internally and externally
  • health & safety experience, including writing RAMS
  • the ability to swim
  • a full UK driving licence and access to a vehicle due to the rural nature of fieldwork.

What you'll receive

  • A combined pension contribution of up to 20%.
  • Career progression and professional development opportunities.
  • 25 days' holiday rising to 28 with length of service.
  • The opportunity to sell up to five days of holiday every year.
  • The opportunity to buy up to ten days of holiday each year (subject to conditions).
  • A healthcare package that allows you to claim back healthcare costs.
  • Life assurance of up to eight times your salary.
  • The opportunity to lease a new electric car through salary sacrifice (subject to conditions).
  • Cashback and discounts from more than 3,000 retailers.
  • One paid volunteering day each year.
  • Enhanced family leave and pay arrangements.
  • Access to an interactive health and wellbeing platform.
  • Support from trained mental health first aiders.
  • A £1,000 referral fee if you recommend someone who is successfully recruited by us
