Are you an experienced electrical or mechanical supervisor/team leader looking for your next move into management? If so, we have an opportunity that has become available for an EM&I Area Manager to join our team, covering multiple sites across Taunton, Yeovil, Wellington and everything in between.

What you'll do

You will lead a team of electrical and mechanical professionals, including a range of technicians, apprentices, and a Team Leader. You'll be inheriting a thoroughly passionate and dedicated team, who thrive on delivering service excellence across water treatment and the wider network across the West supply division.

A key aspect of this role involves upholding high standards of occupational and process health and safety. You will be confident in challenging work activities to ensure they are conducted in accordance with the appropriate safe systems of work, risk assessments and permits.

As the EM&I Area Manager, you will provide a high level of day-to-day expertise and technical support on all aspects of EM&I areas, including showing organisation and leadership to EM&I Technicians. To achieve this, your excellent people management and communication skills will see you regularly communicating with your teams to provide engineering and technical solutions and supporting them where required. A big focus for you will be on training and developing your EM&I team to ensure they are growing within their roles and can self-sufficiently take on complex jobs safely and confidently.

Technicians have a variety of duties and diverse responsibilities which include maintaining, testing, installing and repairing electrical and mechanical equipment. Examples of equipment they work on include chemical dosing and UV systems, pumps and associated control gear, as well as electrical equipment such as switchgear and motors. They also use control systems, such as VSDs and actuated valves, as well as flow, level, and pressure measurement systems and PLCs.

Additional responsibilities include:

  • managing operational budgets with input into capital prioritisation
  • creating cost-effective solutions for the efficient delivery of planned electrical and mechanical maintenance and repairs
  • providing 24/7 support to front-line EM&I and operations staff in emergencies, while also having a big focus on safety and health to ensure your technicians are carrying out their work in line with best practices.

What you'll need

This is a dual-skilled role, so the ideal candidate will have achieved a time served apprenticeship in Electrical/Mechanical Engineering or a HNC/HND or equivalent qualification, along with knowledge and experience in the utilities industry, including IET wiring regulations. WIMES and ATEX awareness training would be an advantage, although training can be provided.

We are also looking for someone who:

  • has exceptional people management and communication skills
  • has a good knowledge of the potable water treatment process
  • is comfortable challenging the ways of working while maintaining service excellence across our sites
  • has a big focus on engaging, training and developing teams
  • demonstrates a strong influencing ability when engaging with a wide range of senior internal customers
  • has experience in CDM, confined space and DSEAR regulations
  • has experience dealing with contractors
  • has experience in writing risk assessments and method statements
  • is comfortable carrying out audits and inspections on internal stakeholders, external contractors and assets/sites.
  • has excellent IT literacy skills
  • has a full and valid UK driving licence due to the remote nature of the role.

What you'll need

  • Significant experience working with asset data in an infrastructure or regulated environment.
  • Strong understanding of asset data quality, governance and assurance.
  • In-depth knowledge of asset data systems and editing tools.
  • Excellent attention to detail and ability to interpret complex technical information.
  • Experience supporting, coaching or training others in a technical environment.
  • Strong IT skills, including Excel and SharePoint.
  • Good understanding of GDPR, data protection and information security.
  • Ability to prioritise workload, manage competing demands and work to SLAs.
  • Clear communication skills and confidence working with a wide range of stakeholders.
  • Experience with GIS and Dynamics would be an advantage.

What you'll receive

  • A combined pension contribution of up to 20%.
  • Career progression and professional development opportunities.
  • 25 days' holiday rising to 28 with length of service.
  • The opportunity to sell up to five days of holiday every year.
  • The opportunity to buy up to ten days of holiday each year (subject to conditions).
  • A healthcare package that allows you to claim back healthcare costs.
  • Life assurance of up to eight times your salary.
  • The opportunity to lease a new electric car through salary sacrifice (subject to conditions).
  • Cashback and discounts from more than 3,000 retailers.
  • One paid volunteering day each year.
  • Enhanced family leave and pay arrangements.
  • Access to an interactive health and wellbeing platform.
  • Support from trained mental health first aiders.
  • A £1,000 referral fee if you recommend someone who is successfully recruited by us.
