With AMP8 on the horizon, we have an exciting and newly created opportunity for a Design Director to join our YTL Construction (Infrastructure) business.

Reporting to the Managing Director, you will be responsible for implementing the design strategy, promoting growth in capability whilst driving innovation and continuous improvement and ensuring delivery to the highest quality standards.

The successful individual will actively manage resources in line with the current delivery programme and growth ambitions as well as providing clear leadership, guidance and support for the team from technical and wellbeing perspectives, fostering a culture of collaboration, innovation and continuous improvement.

This new role will require someone with a transformational mindset and a forward-thinking approach to design.

What you'll do

As an experienced design engineering professional, you will actively manage resources in the design function, in line with the current delivery programme and our growth ambitions.

You will be the design representative on the Senior Leadership team and will oversee and ensure the effective design of all new and refurbished water and wastewater assets that are undertaken internally.

Your core responsibilities will include:

  • ensuring technical assurance across all designs undertaken internally and by our external partners, including design consultants and contractors
  • developing the design strategy to maximise deliverables against the backdrop of a depleted supply chain
  • supporting the discipline leads with all matters including resourcing, eg, suitable numbers and skillsets
  • ensuring compliance with technical standards
  • developing and implementing the strategy for resilience through the targeted growth of our existing capabilities, working in collaboration with our construction teams
  • building an industry-leading digital engineering capability and driving innovation across everything we do
  • continuing the development of standard products and supporting technical standards to ensure ‘just enough' designs
  • ensuring designs are produced to an acceptable quality, in line with the agreed standards, on time and right first time
  • regularly reporting supply chain and internal progress (programme level) to the wider business.

You will also be responsible for growing your directorate while overseeing up to eighty multi-disciplinary (process, hydraulic, civil, mechanical, electrical, structural and geotechnical) staff from graduate to senior and principal levels.

In addition, you will be also responsible for agency engineers, support staff and individuals delivering designs in our supply chain.

What you'll need

In this important role, you will have extensively worked in design and will have an in-depth understanding of design principles, processes and tools, best practices, latest industry trends and emerging water-related technologies.

You will have experience with water and wastewater treatment processes, as well as a strong understanding of how the UK water sector operates. With your design and leadership skills, you will have experience at a senior level and proven people management capabilities of a medium-sized diverse directorate.

Management, collaboration (both internal and external) and influencing skills are an essential part of this role, particularly positively changing cultural mindset.

You will be degree qualified, hold a recognised management and leadership qualification, and will have ideally worked in a ‘design and build' environment.

You will have the ability to adapt and support varied design approaches with knowledge and experience on major infrastructure investment programmes, with the necessary skills to communicate, influence and challenge at all levels to achieve the required outcomes.

What you'll receive

  • Total pension contributions up to 20%.
  • Career progression and professional development opportunities.
  • 25 days' holiday rising to 28 with length of service.
  • The opportunity to buy up to ten days' holiday and sell up to five every year.
  • A healthcare package that allows you to claim back healthcare costs.
  • Performance-related bonus.
  • A car allowance.
  • Life assurance of up to eight times your salary.
  • A new electric car in exchange for part of your gross salary, subject to conditions.
  • Cashback and discounts from more than 3,000 retailers.
  • One paid volunteering day each year.
  • Enhanced family leave and pay arrangements.
  • An interactive health and wellbeing platform.
  • Support from mental health first aiders.
  • A £1,000 referral fee if you recommend someone to work for us.
