Do you have experience in GIS and an interest in the water environment? Do you enjoy finding creative ways to use GIS tools and analysis to understand and help solve complex environmental water quality problems? If so, we have an exciting opportunity for you to join our Smart Rivers team as a GIS Technician.

Interviews for this role will be conducted in early October.

What you'll do

Reporting to the Technical Manager, you will provide support to develop, refine, embed and maintain Field Maps, Survey123 apps and geospatial methodologies.

You'll also support with the analysis, tools and reports for the Smart Rivers programme. Geospatial data integration, automated analysis and reporting are key enablers for the effective development and delivery of this exciting new programme that requires the installation of circa 2,000 continuous water quality monitors across our region.

Your creativity and geospatial support will help unlock efficiencies with desktop assessments, field surveys, installation, and progress management of this geospatially distributed programme.

You will help identify and develop creative ways to automate or improve efficiency to visualise progress and report results geospatially to convey the appropriate and clear messages to enable effective decisions that lead to positive environmental and stakeholder outcomes.

Initially, this will entail:

  • refining and managing field data collected using our monitor siting and ecology survey Field Maps and Survey123 apps
  • supporting our internal GIS team to build and refine our Smart Viewer based on ESRI Experience Builder web maps architecture
  • land registry queries to identify landowners
  • desktop screening to inform site selection
  • developing GIS schematics of outfalls and their catchments to help visualise the situational context and factors that can influence the data, providing a source-pathway-receptor catchment perspective
  • supporting the development and implementation of a geospatial project management dashboard to track the status of every installation
  • geospatial processing and management of field survey data from our water quality remote-controlled 'surfboard' and drone surveys
  • creating standardised maps that might be needed for various purposes
  • supporting and working with the GIS/IT team for the research and development of appropriate geospatial dashboards and graphical data reporting using ESRI and other suitable tools
  • general GIS support to develop and manage data structures, standards and compliance
  • reviewing and finding effective geospatial ways to report and visualise near real-time water quality data for Wessex Water, the regulator, and the public.

The role will require engagement with other departments to ensure we identify and maximise potential synergies with existing projects and the available data sources, and integration with existing IT platforms.

This is an office/home-based role with a 3/2 split. The role is based in Calverton Bath, but the occasional visit to our Trowbridge hub, located within walking distance from the train station, will be needed (likely to be one day a week).

What you'll need

To be successful, you need to have a good knowledge of the ESRI suite of tools and their applications. It is not only about the data, but what we can do with the data to make it meaningful that counts. You will be able to plan your workload and work efficiently alone and as part of the Smart Rivers team.

Experience using ArcGIS Pro/GIS packages is essential, especially ArcGIS Pro, Experience Builder, Field Maps and Survey 123. Using programming languages, such as R or Python, would be beneficial but not essential.

You will also need:

  • good data management, listening and interpretation skills with an appreciation of technical objectives
  • the ability to communicate technical information to all levels using GIS-based outputs
  • proficiency in a range of Microsoft packages, specifically Excel
  • an understanding of environmental issues relating to the abstraction and discharge of water and water pollution, but this is not essential
  • an understanding of conservation and other environmental legislation, but this is not essential
  • a basic understanding of catchment hydrology or integrated water/catchment management.

If you have enthusiasm and an interest in helping to improve the water quality of our water environment, then this role presents the perfect opportunity with the right mix of curiosity, creativity, and teamwork to explore the art of the possible through GIS.

What you'll receive

  • A combined pension contribution of up to 20%.
  • Career progression and professional development opportunities.
  • 25 days' holiday rising to 28 with length of service.
  • The opportunity to buy up to ten days' holiday and sell up to five every year.
  • A healthcare package that allows you to claim back healthcare costs.
  • Life assurance of up to eight times your salary.
  • A new electric car in exchange for part of your gross salary, subject to conditions.
  • Cashback and discounts from more than 3,000 retailers.
  • One paid volunteering day each year.
  • Enhanced family leave and pay arrangements.
  • An interactive health and wellbeing platform.
  • Support from mental health first aiders.
  • A £1,000 referral fee if you recommend someone to work for us.
