As we prepare to deliver a significant capital programme over the next five years, we're investing in the growth and development of our design department.

We're seeking a Principal Mechanical Engineer with water industry experience to help shape the future of our water infrastructure department by bringing strong technical expertise, innovative thinking and leadership to our team.

What you'll do

This is a unique opportunity to influence major projects from concept to construction, delivering innovative, sustainable, and best-value solutions that are safe to build, operate, and maintain. 

Your typical day-to-day in this role can include:

  • contributing to the overall strategic technical direction and standards for our Mechanical Engineering team
  • leading mechanical design across the full spectrum of water and wastewater infrastructure, including abstraction, boreholes, treatment works and sewage networks
  • developing and evaluating options to identify the least whole-life cost solutions
  • reviewing and approving mechanical schedules, drawings and P&IDs
  • reviewing and approving technical reports, calculations, designs and drawings for compliance with our health and safety, technical, legal and environmental standards
  • providing expert technical guidance and mentoring to support Mechanical Engineers in developing appropriate and cost-effective solutions
  • collaborating with other engineering disciplines to ensure scope alignment and integrated delivery
  • mentoring junior Engineers and actively contributing to team development
  • preparing design fee proposals and scheme design programmes
  • liaising with Site Managers on technical issues 
  • ensuring design proceeds in line with budgetary and programme constraints, and that the project management team are aware of the state of progress.

What you'll need

You'll need to be a proactive, solutions-focused engineer with a passion for excellence and innovation.

You'll bring: 

  • a degree in Electrical Engineering or a related discipline
  • a minimum of 2 Asset Management Periods of Water industry experience  
  • extensive experience ideally within the water industry, but other relevant industries can be considered
  • a Chartered Engineering qualification with a relevant institution
  • experience working with contractors, clients and stakeholders
  • strong understanding of risk management, particularly environmental risks
  • excellent communication, negotiation and influencing skills
  • a positive, adaptable mindset and a strong team ethic.
