Do you want to carry out sampling survey projects, data analysis and equipment management to ensure compliance metrics are achieved and improvement opportunities are realised? If so, an exciting and varied position has become available for a Science Technician to join our Water Recycling team.

What you'll do

As a Science Technician you will provide essential support and assistance to the Water Recycling West Science team in ensuring cost-effective compliance with environmental quality standards at Water Recycling Centres across Somerset.

Reporting to the Divisional Science Manager and working closely with a team of Process Scientists, you will help provide essential support across the division. Your role will involve working flexibly within a dynamic, operational environment and will be a mix of both field and desk-based activities.

Your responsibilities will include:

  • routine biomass sampling and microscopy analysis to monitor biological treatment health
  • the use of specialist software to manage the routine operational sampling programme
  • the coordination of the teams' analytical equipment
  • downloading and organising bulk data to assist Process Scientists in troubleshooting process changes, as well as providing evidence on compliance performance
  • delivering basic training on good sampling practice and analytical equipment.

What you'll need

You will have a background in a scientific, environmental or analytical discipline and will also have experience working outside in all weathers, ideally on operational sites.

You will be an organised individual who can balance multiple ongoing projects and ensure good communication with your stakeholders.

In addition, you will:

  • have experience adhering to health and safety policies
  • be confident working autonomously and managing your own schedule
  • be a competent user of Microsoft Office packages, especially Excel
  • have experience adapting to new software packages specific to the role
  • be a proactive individual who seeks out opportunities to improve
  • be a team player who wants to help the team achieve more
  • have knowledge and/or an interest in wastewater treatment.

You will also need a full UK driving licence and be willing to drive frequently between remote sites across Somerset and occasionally our wider region. A vehicle will be provided for this purpose.

What you'll receive

  • A combined pension contribution of up to 20%.
  • Career progression and professional development opportunities.
  • 25 days' holiday rising to 28 with length of service.
  • The opportunity to buy up to ten days' holiday and sell up to five every year.
  • A healthcare package that allows you to claim back healthcare costs.
  • Life assurance of up to eight times your salary.
  • A new electric car in exchange for part of your gross salary, subject to conditions.
  • Cashback and discounts from more than 3,000 retailers.
  • One paid volunteering day each year.
  • Enhanced family leave and pay arrangements.
  • An interactive health and wellbeing platform.
  • Support from mental health first aiders.
  • A £1,000 referral fee if you recommend someone to work for us.
