We have an exciting new opportunity for a Senior Design Manager to join YTL Construction UK to work on one of the largest and most exciting private regeneration projects in the UK with multiple projects being coordinated simultaneously.

We are currently transforming the historic former Filton Airfield – the birthplace of Concorde and supersonic travel – into a thriving new neighbourhood for Bristol, known as Brabazon.

You will be required to support the Design Management function for YTL Construction UK and provide professional expertise in managing, monitoring and commenting on the development of the technical design to meet the employer's requirements and relevant standards and regulations within the agreed constraints of time and budget.

What you'll do

The successful candidate will be involved in both pre-construction, design and the construction phases from RIBA stages 4 to 7.

Pre-construction and design phase

You will:

  • monitor and comment on the design process to ensure compliance with regulation and legislation
  • carry out design reviews of all emerging designs for completeness to RIBA Stage 4 and ensure this meets the clients' requirements, in terms of functionality, aesthetics and cost, together with the need for buildability and avoidance of defects
  • review the design with the Principal Designer and Health and Safety department to comply with CDM, Building Safety Act, and eliminate risks in the design
  • ensure the design process recognises current legislation, standards, and codes of practice where appropriate
  • support or lead, and actively contribute to design team meetings and close out actions as necessary
  • support the accreditation processes to ensure the design meets the requirements
  • manage the technical approval process and provide input to secure section agreements; S38; S104, and similar statutory approvals where applicable
  • assist with the procurement of subcontractors, including the response to queries and advising on identified value engineering options
  • contribute to the drafting and monitoring of the Project Risk Register
  • take the lead in the identification and communication of potential value engineering and, where agreed, its integration into the design
  • manage the Statutory Authority planning process, applications, approvals and discharges
  • develop and monitor the design programme.

Construction phase

You will:

  • support the design process RIBA Stage 5 – Construction; RIBA Stage 6 – Handover and RIBA Stage 7 – Use
  • monitor the design process to ensure compliance with regulation and legislation
  • lead design team meetings
  • ensure that the building control requirements are managed and tracked to ensure compliance
  • support the accreditation processes to ensure the continuing design and construction phase meets the requirements
  • ensure that there is good communication and collaboration between relevant parties, and ensure the effective flow of design and production information
  • contribute to package launch meetings to ensure that critical elements of the design are understood, and how they need to be delivered
  • ensure lessons learned are identified and recorded to benefit future projects
  • work with the Operational and Commercial team, overseeing the coordinated design and technical review of material suppliers, sub-contractors, and specialist designs relating to the project
  • manage subcontractor and supplier IRS deadlines
  • ensure that contractors' design portions are robustly managed to ensure the capture of all design changes.

What you'll need

To undertake the role of Senior Design Manager, you will have extensive design management experience with a proven background of working on major projects, particularly commercial offices, with a main contractor.

You will have good technical knowledge of the design and construction process, including regulation codes, and applicable legislation. In addition, you will ideally have detailed working knowledge of BREEAM, WELL, WIRED, and NABERS, as well as an understanding of 4 Projects (Viewpoint).

With relevant qualifications in engineering, architecture (or a relevant technical design discipline), you will also have experience in using technical design tools or software packages, such as Computer Aided Design (CAD) software, Autodesk Architectural Desktop, advanced word-processing, and spreadsheet packages.

In addition, you will have:

  • effective communication skills to manage and motivate teams to achieve set goals
  • analytical and problem-solving skills
  • presentation skills
  • experience working in technical teams
  • a working knowledge of CDM legislation and the Building Safety Act
  • knowledge of applicable regulations, standards, and legislation
  • experience of working with large teams and on major projects.
