An exciting opportunity has arisen to join our Waste Planning team as a Wastewater Treatment Planning Engineer, where you will play a pivotal role as the asset owner for the wastewater treatment.
This position sits at the heart of our wastewater capital investment programme, ensuring that all delivery activities are aligned with:
- Strategic objectives for long-term infrastructure resilience
- Regulatory standards set by Ofwat and other governing bodies
- Customer expectations for service quality and environmental stewardship
What you'll do
As a Wastewater Treatment Planning Engineer, your duties include:
- Strategic Planning & Investment.
- Wastewater Treatment Investment Plan: Contribute to shaping a five-year plan that aligns with long-term goals and regulatory requirements.
- Cost-Benefit Focus: Ensure investments are financially sound and technically justified.
- Regulatory & Compliance Support.
- Ofwat Submissions: Assist in preparing regulatory documentation and liaising with auditors.
- Technical Oversight & Programme Management.
- Monitor the associated capital delivery programmes; many sub-programmes have Ofwat financial performance commitments.
- Project Review Meetings: Participate in adjudicating design reviews to balance compliance, cost, and customer service.
- Design Standards Compliance: Review project designs to ensure they meet internal standards and affordability criteria.
- Knowledge of wastewater or sludge treatment processes (e.g. design of treatment systems, hydraulic analysis and understanding of computer hydraulic modelling)
- Stakeholder Engagement.
- Internal Teams: Collaborate closely with Delivery, Operations, and Development teams.
- Planning & Documentation.
- Brief Writing: Draft clear, value-driven briefs for technical solutions.
- Plan Development: Assist in the preparation of business plans and drainage and wastewater management plans (DWMP), National Environment Programmes (WINEP) and Long-Term Delivery Strategies (LTDS), together with submissions to Ofwat and other regulators (e.g. DEFRA).
What you'll need
- Analytical Thinking - Crucial for hydraulic modelling, process design, and investment planning.
- Communication Skills - Influential verbal and written skills needed for stakeholder engagement and reporting.
- Cross-Functional Collaboration - Ability to work across Delivery, Operations, Development, and external agencies.
- Decision-Making - Firm, consistent choices required during project reviews and technical adjudication.
- Project Management - Juggling multiple schemes and programmes simultaneously.
- Customer Engagement - Liaising with residents, councils, and public forums to explain plans and risks.
- Degree: Relevant field (not strictly engineering), showing flexibility in academic background.
- Wastewater treatment process design.
- Civil engineering (preferable).
- Office Software: Proficiency in Access, Excel, PowerPoint, and Word for data analysis and reporting.
- Initiative & Independence: Ability to self-direct with minimal supervision.
- Relationship Building: Strong interpersonal skills to foster trust across teams and with external bodies.
- Public-Facing Confidence: Comfortable presenting to parish councils and engaging with residents.
