What you'll do

The Bioresources team operates all sludge treatment centres with biogas production plants at Wessex Water.

As the Avonmouth Sludge Supervisor you will lead the 24-hour dewatering operation on site and ensure compliance with health and safety, environmental and COMAH regulations.

The role includes but is not limited to the tasks below:

  • overseeing the sludge treatment and dewatering processes, ensuring compliance is maintained (UWWTD, OSM, IED, BAS, etc)
  • maximising sludge treatment output and quality, as well as minimising the cost of the operations
  • line managing the 24/7 dewatering team and gatehouse team, including their one-to-ones, development, HR related issues, training requirements and managing performance
  • ensuring all health and safety policies, procedures and best practices are adhered to and promote a safety-first culture amongst teams
  • working collaboratively with the wider Bioresources teams to ensure that sludge treatment requirements are achieved
  • overseeing the operation of the site gatehouses, the site entry process and traffic management
  • where required, supporting the Operations Manager out of hours to deal with incidents, emergencies or process issues
  • maintaining compliance against COMAH regulations.

What you'll need

We are looking for a candidate with strong operational experience and people management experience who can lead a safety-first team.

You will have excellent organisational and planning skills, along with having effective communication, persuading and influencing skills and the ability to make clear evidence-based decisions.

In addition, we are also looking for:

  • 5+ years' experience in sludge treatment/water recycling
  • 5+ years' experience in optimising treatment processes and procedures on complex treatment works
  • 3+ years' experience in managing or supporting the management of a team
  • NVQ level 3 in sludge treatment
  • Level 3 in a leadership and management course
  • a strong background in the operation of sewage and sludge treatment processes, as well as biogas plants
  • a high-level understanding of process safety concepts and principles, such as hazard awareness, hazard identification and risk assessment, management of change, safe systems of work and human factors
  • a good understanding of Health and Safety regulations such as DSEAR and COSHH
  • knowledge of wastewater, waste and environmental regulations, such as UWWTD, IED and BAS
  • proficiency in the analysis of numerical data for decision making and reporting
  • proficiency with data reporting systems (Amulet, Prism, SCADA, Qlikview, etc)
  • proficiency in the use of Microsoft applications (Word, Excel and PowerPoint)
  • a clean UK driving licence.

It would also be desirable, but not essential, to have the following:

  • DSEAR qualification (eg, CompEx) or prepared to receive training
  • Occupational Health and Safety qualification (eg, IOSH or NEBOSH) or prepared to receive training.
