Are you a positive individual with an understanding of environmental regulations and water quality permitting? Do you have excellent organisational skills, with a great attention to detail? If so, we have a great new opportunity for you within our Water Quality permitting team as a Permitting Adviser.
The permitting team provides a wide range of permitting services and guidance across the business to ensure regulatory permit applications, variations and queries are delivered on time.
We are looking for someone who has proven experience in water quality permitting. Any additional understanding of wastewater processes, sewerage systems or waste discharges would be beneficial.
What you'll do
You will be joining a dynamic team of permitting professionals, responsible for maintaining a register of around 1,700 water discharge permits. This is a varied role, covering all stages of the permitting process across different business assets, including water supply assets, network systems, water recycling centres and medium combustion plants. A key area of the role is ensuring AMP permit delivery, working closely with engineering and compliance teams to meet the regulatory compliance dates.
As a Permitting Adviser, you would be involved in regular liaison with our regulators, including the Environment Agency (EA), to discuss specific permit applications and any changes in the associated regulations. This role involves great diligence, ensuring essential permit information is accurate and up to date to assist with the delivery of our environmental obligations.
You will:
- maintain and improve the EA records database and associated management systems to allow for company-wide use
- Maintain knowledge of current and future environmental legislation to provide up-to-date permitting advice across the business
- lead on more complex and technical permit decisions and applications, ensuring they meet the requirements of the most recent regulatory guidance
- help manage the team's workload, prioritise permit applications, and provide support across the wider permitting team
- take responsibility for supporting and developing junior members of the team, ensuring that they develop relevant knowledge to complete their roles effectively
- involve occasional site audits, raising any non-compliant permitting actions and assigning any corrective actions.
What you'll need
To succeed in this role, you will have strong verbal and written communication skills suitable for liaising with internal departments and external regulators. You will need to be innovative and positive in your approach.
In addition, we are looking for:
- competency in the use of Microsoft Office, including Word and Excel
- a degree or equivalent in a STEM subject
- a good eye for detail
- an understanding of wastewater, sewerage and water supply processes and the associated regulations applicable
- experience completing environmental permitting applications, and knowledge and experience
- experience with GIS software packages and data collation and presentation
- a full clean driving licence
- strong verbal and written communication skills for consulting with external bodies and regulators
- an innovative and positive approach.
Most of all, you will be a great team player who is willing to work both independently and together.
What you'll receive
- A combined pension contribution of up to 20%.
- Career progression and professional development opportunities.
- 25 days' holiday rising to 28 with length of service.
- The opportunity to buy up to ten days' holiday and sell up to five every year.
- A healthcare package that allows you to claim back healthcare costs.
- Life assurance of up to eight times your salary.
- A new electric car in exchange for part of your gross salary, subject to conditions.
- Cashback and discounts from more than 3,000 retailers.
- One paid volunteering day each year.
- Enhanced family leave and pay arrangements.
- An interactive health and wellbeing platform.
- Support from mental health first aiders.
- A £1,000 referral fee if you recommend someone to work for us.
