About the apprenticeship

Our Engineering and Sustainable Delivery team is responsible for designing and building the infrastructure for our services, including sewage treatment works, pumping stations and reservoirs. 

Your primary focus as a Quantity Surveyor will be to achieve value for money. 

This will involve working alongside our internal delivery teams by attending on site, carrying out valuations and participating in progress reviews, as well as meetings related to payments, variations and any claims. 

During your apprenticeship, you will support our Operational and Construction teams in all aspects of pre and post contract duties. 

The degree apprenticeship is dovetailed with the professional institution chartership process. 

You will also work towards your RICS APC, which means you'll be a recognised Chartered Surveyor when you complete your apprenticeship.

What you'll do

As a Quantity Surveying Trainee apprentice, you will be working in an energetic environment dealing with a range of varied projects. 

You will be developing the relevant legal, economic, management and technology skills needed to: 

  • provide assistance and support to quantity surveyors and more senior commercial staff within the team, ultimately working towards your own responsibility for commercial project delivery 
  • assist with estimating, procurement and tendering, contract management, including payments and financial reporting, to effectively control construction costs 
  • work with the NEC suite of contracts for design and construction works 
  • work to financial targets and deadlines, interpret project programmes, understand risk and react to the demands of construction delivery to ensure best value 
  • develop skills in data management, primarily with Microsoft Excel, SharePoint and other software systems to ensure compliance with corporate systems, standards and procedures 
  • interface with other project delivery staff including Project Managers, Designers, Engineers, Estimators and Site Managers.

Where you'll work

This role is regional so you will be expected to work anywhere within the Wessex Water region from Bristol to Bournemouth and Salisbury to Taunton.

What you'll need

You will need:

  • GCSEs A-C in English and maths
  • two A levels or a Higher National Certificate (HNC)
  • excellent communication skills
  • the ability to build working relationships quickly at all levels
  • good computer literacy
  • a willingness to work across the Wessex Water region.

Apprenticeship Course Information

Duration 

Five years plus end point assessment. 

Qualifications 

  • Chartered Surveyor QS Degree Apprenticeship Level 6. 
  • BSc (Hons) in Quantity Surveying and Commercial Management. 
  • Accreditation from the Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors (RICS). 

Training provision 

Training will be delivered by University of West of England – Bristol. 

  • Day release.
