Are you looking for an opportunity to use your scientific knowledge as part of a leading organisation?  If so, we have a great opportunity for you to join our team as a Supply Scientist in the Dorset area.

What you'll do

As a Supply Scientist, you'll be a trusted advisor to the drinking water supply operations team, making vital water quality decisions under pressure, authoring detailed high-quality reports for the Drinking Water Inspectorate, and building strong relationships across the business to keep our customers safe. Additionally, a key focus on discharges to water courses and pollution reporting to the Environment Agency.

Your key responsibilities will include: 

  • investigating water quality incidents and customer contacts. Direct immediate operational actions, identifying root causes and longer‑term fixes
  • producing concise, evidence‑based reports to the Drinking Water Inspectorate and internal leadership
  • building trust with colleagues across the Water Production, Networks, Catchment, Compliance, Engineering and Laboratory teams
  • communicating complex issues simply and confidently to senior stakeholders
  • collaborating with engineers throughout all stages of new schemes – from outline design to commissioning, ensuring water quality and regulatory compliance remains central to all discussions
  • reviewing Drinking Water Safety Plan risks from abstraction through treatment to distribution, to monitor adherence with regulatory and company standards
  • reviewing trends in chemical, physical and microbial parameters; spot emerging risks; recommend pragmatic interventions
  • capturing lessons learned, strengthen processes, and drive continuous improvement across drinking water supply operations
  • maintaining compliance with environmental regulations including OSM compliance and pollution reporting.

Your own car and valid driving licence is essential for this hybrid office/site-based role, with regular visits required to water treatment centres and network sites. Normal working hours are 08:00 to 16:00 Monday to Friday with participation in an out‑of‑hours incident support rota required once fully trained.

What you'll need

  • A relevant scientific degree (or equivalent experience).
  • Proven ability to make clear, defensible decisions.
  • Exceptional communication skills; able to craft precise regulatory reports and brief senior leaders.
  • Credibility and great interpersonal skills to develop effective working relationships and assist multidisciplinary teams to maintain focus on drinking water quality at all times.
  • Comfortable with data, root‑cause thinking and translating analysis into operational action.
