Are you passionate about protecting the environment? Want to work with external companies in regulating their industrial wastewater discharge? If so, we have a great opportunity for you to join our Trade Effluent team as a Trade Effluent Officer for the Dorset area.
What you'll do
Our team works with hundreds of businesses to ensure their industrial wastewater meets regulatory standards before entering our sewer network. This critical work protects our infrastructure and the environment.
Your role will be instrumental in managing relationships with 200+ businesses in your assigned area (Dorset), issuing consents and managing breaches under the provision of the Water Industry Act 1991.
In your role, you will:
- deal with a variety of industries and sectors, from aviation and food manufacturing to breweries and chemical manufacturers
- negotiate solutions to ensure compliance with regulatory standards, including developing formal action plans with businesses in breach of consent
- visit and build relationships with businesses discharging in your area (Dorset)
- manage enforcement action in the event of permit breaches, liaising with our Legal team to gather evidence and building robust cases for potential legal proceedings
- assess risk and issue permits for industrial wastewater discharges
- lead and support investigations for illegal discharges and incidents
- collaborate with multiple teams and disciplines across Wessex Water.
What you'll need
Ideally, you will have a degree qualification or equivalent in a science or engineering-based subject. Preferably, you will understand wastewater treatment or industrial production processes.
You will also need:
- excellent communication skills to build relationships with businesses and explain technical/legal requirements clearly
- to be accurate and have good attention to detail as you will be analysing data
- good computer skills including proficiency in Microsoft Office
- to enjoy working in a team environment
- be able to work independently and take ownership of multiple projects
- a full driving licence as you will make site visits and attend meetings at external companies
- experience liaising with customers and/or applying environmental legislation - this would be an advantage, although training will be provided.
What you'll receive
- A combined pension contribution of up to 20%.
- Career progression and professional development opportunities.
- 25 days' holiday rising to 28 with length of service.
- The opportunity to buy up to ten days' holiday and sell up to five every year.
- A healthcare package that allows you to claim back healthcare costs.
- Life assurance of up to eight times your salary.
- Cashback and discounts from more than 3,000 retailers.
- One paid volunteering day each year.
- Enhanced family leave and pay arrangements.
- An interactive health and wellbeing platform.
- Support from mental health first aiders.
- A £1,000 referral fee if you recommend someone to work for us.
