About the Electrical, Mechanical and Instrumentation team

Every day our Electrical, Mechanical and Instrumentation (EM&I) teams are busy testing, maintaining and repairing equipment.

This includes the many pumps, motors, valves and other types of equipment that keep our treatment works and pipe networks working efficiently.

If you have good mathematical skills and a strong desire to train as a highly skilled technician, this multi-skilled role will suit you.

Our programme is approved by the Institution of Mechanical Engineers (IMechE) and the Institution of Engineering and Technology (IET).

What will you be doing?

Duties will include:

  • carrying out planned and reactive fault diagnosis
  • maintenance and testing on mechanical and electrical equipment and circuits
  • modifying or rewiring electrical circuits
  • restoring and repairing mechanical components and assisting in the installation of mechanical/ electrical/electronic equipment
  • carrying out quality inspections.

Where will you work?

You will be based in one of our regional EM&I teams across the Wessex Water region. Our EM&I apprenticeship are usually based within the water recycling department.

What do we look for?

You will need:

  • 5 GCSEs including maths, English and science grade C or above.
  • A level maths and/or physics is an advantage for this apprenticeship.
  • Experience of practical engineering at school or at home.
  • Good computer literacy.
  • Good communication skills and the ability to work in a small team.

Three to four years depending on existing qualifications and experience.

Qualifications

  • Maintenance and Operations Technician Apprenticeship
  • EngTech professional status –  IMechE or IET
  • Level 3 Award in Electrical/ Electronic Engineering
  • Level 3 extended diploma in mechanical and electrical maintenance
  • Level 2 performing engineering operations
  • 18th Edition (for those undergoing an electrical pathway)

Training provision

Training is delivered in partnership between Weston College and Wessex Water Academy:

  • Year 1: Residential Monday to Wednesday at Weston College, Weston-Super-Mare.
  • Year 2: Two to three days training per week at Weston College and Wessex Water Electrical Training Centre, Weston-Super-Mare.
  • Year 3: One day at Weston College if following an electrical route.
