About the apprenticeship

As a sewerage operative you will be responsible for maintaining the complex network of pipelines and pumping stations which transport wastewater from our customers to our water recycling centres.

We transport 480 million litres of wastewater from our 2.9 million customers every day, while maintaining 21,600 miles of sewer pipework and 1,660 wastewater pumping stations, including rising mains and sewer overflows.

Maintaining our network involves clearing 33,000 blockages each year; more than two thirds of these blockages are caused by wet wipes.

Your work will include CCTV inspections of pipework to determine the condition of pipework or locate blockages, use of jetting equipment to clear blockages and maintenance of mechanical and electrical pumping equipment.

In this exciting role which will vary from day-to-day, you’ll develop a wide skillset and gain personal and professional skills.

You will also:

  • clear any sewer blockages by jetting
  • trace and locate sewer defects
  • monitor and maintain assets
  • carry out sewer surveys
  • record and clear pollutions
  • follow traffic management procedures
  • manage and report data
  • use CCTV equipment to survey the sewer network
  • talk with customers.

Where will you work?

You will be required to travel to different locations. A company vehicle will be supplied to you when you are ready to work independently.

Training provision

YTL Wessex Academy:

  • Monthly workshops and 1:1 days with your Wessex Water Skills Coach once a month.
  • Training will be on site by qualified Wessex Water instructors.
  • Weston College deliver a short training course as part of this apprenticeship.
  • Maths and English is delivered online.
