About the wastewater operations team

The wastewater operations teams are responsible for treating the waste of our customers while maintaining excellent health and safety standards and protecting the environment.

You will be trained to operate and maintain a wide variety of specialist equipment on your own sewage treatment site(s).

You will eventually be working on your own so will need to be able to act on your own initiative and be able to solve problems quickly and safely.

You will to be able to identify issues and call for the appropriate support when necessary.

In this role you will become familiar with all the sewage works in your regional area.

We will provide you with the best equipment and training as you work alongside qualified operators, specialist engineers and scientists to ensure the best level of treatment is achieved at your sites.

What will you be doing?

Duties will include:

  • ensuring wastewater is treated effectively
  • carrying out site checks
  • processing sludge
  • taking water samples
  • cleaning and maintaining filters, screens and reed beds.
  • analysing data
  • making sure effluent compliance standards
  • conducting health and safety risk assessments.

Where will you work?

You will be required to travel to different locations. A company vehicle will be supplied to you when you are ready to work independently.

What do we look for?

  • Good computer literacy.
  • Excellent communication skills both verbally and in writing.
  • Interest in data patterns and biology.
  • The ability to work in a team, outside in all weather.

Training provision

YTL Wessex Academy:

  • Monthly workshops and 1:1 days with your Wessex Water Skills Coach once a month.
  • Training will be on site by qualified Wessex Water instructors.
  • Weston College deliver a short training course as part of this apprenticeship.
  • Maths and English is delivered online.
